Software To Organize Your Life

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Like a lot of people, I generally have quite a few things on the go.

People want things done, I’ve got work to do, things to build, goals to achieve, projects to complete, exercise to do. You know how it is – life stuff. I’m also prone to having ‘ideas’ very often, and if I don’t write them down quickly they’re gone forever.

I’ve used a lot of time/project management software in the past, and over the last few weeks I’ve been trying out a new web application from 37Signals (the guys who made Basecamp, I like that too) called Ta-Da List.

The idea is very simple, it’s a web-based to-do list.

It’s been done before, many times. It’s quite a busy space – which is great for you and I.

You make as many ‘Lists’ as you want, and add items inside of those lists. Create a list, add item to list, mark item in list as done. Thats it! 3 basic actions. It’s probably the best thing about Ta-Da list – a totally bare bones approach which makes it very quick to use and requires almost zero thinking.

No one wants to have to think about things like time or categorization at 2 in the morning when they’ve just come up with a world shatteringly sweet idea and just want to throw it into their ‘Random’ list in a couple of lines.

Here is what my ‘eSport’ list looked like this morning:

As you can see, very simple and very clean. I’ve got similar lists for ‘Life’, ‘Work’, and my other web projects.

If you’re interested in having a crack at a slightly more organized life, give it a shot. It’s free.

If you’re after something more complex, but still clean (and also wildly popular) – check out Remember The Milk.

It will sync up with just about anything, and lets you attach a whole lot of meta data to your tasks.

If you are a Gmail user who uses the Google interface rather than a desktop email client, Google Tasks is another very good good option which you can turn on via Google Labs. It does everything Ta-da does at this point!

Please Don’t Forget Earth Hour

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Earth hour is at 8:30PM – Saturday 28 March 2009, which is today.

What does that mean?

It means you should make an effort to turn out the lights in your home, or where you are staying, for an hour starting at 8:30

That’s lame dude – I’m not a hippy!

You don’t have to be. The Empire State building will be going dark. Mexico City, Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Toronto, London, Rome, Moscow, Mumbai, Lagos, Bangkok, Jakarta – trust me, I can go on. All of these cities have pledged to promote the concept of earth hour and have received resounding support from their residents.

Even the most hard nosed among us will admit that the planet does not have infinite resources.

You and I are not going to be here forever, and neither is our planet realistically.

This event is not about saving the world in one night. It is about making a statement as a people.

Statements do shape the world, and history marks thousands of them.

The democratic world revolves around the idea of a common consensus. If the consensus is to protect the planet, and events like this are the statement which declares that consensus – you and I taking 10 seconds to flick off the lights for a spell really doesn’t seem like a huge price to pay for promoting the health of our world, does it?

Today would be a great day to check out An Inconvenient Truth – An exceptional film by Al Gore on climate change.

Sega Outrun Arcade

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Does anyone remember Sega’s original arcade racer?

It’s back, in HD – on Xbox Live. I’d be exceptionally excited if I owned a 360.

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, Golden Axe and now Outrun? – I’m giddy with pure joy (or rather I would be – did I own more than an imaginary 360.)

Check out some footage!

5 Scientific Reasons Folks Act Like Assholes

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Here is a top notch article from cracked.com putting some science behind the actions of the assholes of the world.

It even makes Pulp Fiction references – here is a taste:

When the subjects were shown pictures of the hated subject, heretofore known as the Motherfucker Control, two areas called the putamen and the insular cortex kicked into high gear. These areas are also associated with motor planning–so when the participants saw the Motherfucker Control, their brains immediately began preparing to act.

I for one know that my ‘Motherfucker Control’ is off the hook.
